Here at The Byte Wizards HQ, we’re big fans of putting your website on virtual servers (or regular servers) that guarantee a certain amount of resources. For bigger site with variable traffic, there are virtual server solutions to scale to the site’s needs. Finances, though, mean some choose for shared hosting.
Clients with fixed regular or virtual servers have asked ask for functionality to check their resources aren’t being over-used. In this way they could know about potential problems before they occur and become a big issue.
In the case of shared hosting, the hosting company hosts many different sites on the same webserver. This can lead to many issues, one of which is the possibility of the host trying to put too many sites on a single server. With shared hosting, things may start out okay but as more sites are added there can be problems later down the line (also security problems, but we’ll address that another time). It’s useful for these clients also to know when their host’s servers are low on resources.
Due to these client requests, we’re adding checks for CPU load, available memory, and disk space to our maintenance package.
This will allow us to advise our clients when it is probably time to look at changing their hosting solution, or for them to determine if their existing hosting provider is meeting their requirements and the terms of their hosting contract.
